French Activists Try to Save Empty Church

Two Lutheran Seminaries to Close and Reopen as New School

(RNS) The new plan comes as mainline Protestant seminaries take steps to weather financial storms caused by an average drop in enrollments of nearly 24 percent since 2005.

CHR Comment: The seminaries were overstaffed, running deficits, and had a diminishing number of students. A joint committee quickly made the decision to restructure. Both institutions were seminaries of the ELCA which has suffered loss of membership in recent years due to changing teachings on human sexuality and other issues.

Oldest US graduate Seminary to Close Campus

(RNS) The 208-year-old school calls the move part of “a bold new direction” as it vies to stop running big deficits and struggles to find a financially sustainable model.

CHR Comment: Andover-Newton seminary has historic affiliations with Congregationalism, American Baptists, and the United Church of Christ. These denominations are among the mainline Protestant churches experiencing steep decline in membership. Enrollment at mainline Protestant seminaries has dropped by 24% since 2005.
