Pope Declares Swedish Nun a Saint

Maria Elisabeth Hesselblad helped hide Jewish families in her convent during the German occupation of Rome.

CHR Comment: Hesselblad was baptized as a Lutheran in Sweden, converted to Catholicism in New York, helped to found the Bridgettine Order in Rome, and hid at least a dozen Jews in her convent during the Holocaust. She was truly an interesting person, the first Swedish saint in over 600 years.

Italy Seizes 3,500 Fake ‘Apostolic Blessings’ in Rome

Police said Monday they had seized 3,500 fake Vatican parchments that were being sold to unsuspecting pilgrims taking part in Pope Francis’ Holy Year celebrations.

CHR Comment: The counterfeit parchments commemorate pilgrimages to Rome and personal blessings. They would be worth $76,000 U.S. The Vatican sells its parchments as fund raising for charity. They have decided not to outsource the production of such parchments in the future.

Catholics, Lutherans Preparing Joint Reformation Anniversary Event

CHR Comment: The Pope recently visited a Lutheran congregation in Rome. According to Rev. Martin Junge, president of the Lutheran World Federation, the last three popes have made such visits and relations are mending between Lutherans and Catholics, working toward intercommunion. Expect significant develops around the time of the 2017 anniversary of the Reformation.
